Eat Local, Shop Local
Which restaurants serve locally grown meat, eggs, and vegetables? Is there an environmentally friendly dry cleaner?
Share info about your favorite locally owned and operated business. Promote those who tread softly on the planet, and use our resources wisely. Leave your suggestions below. We’re building a sustainable business database.
In the meantime, here’s a taste of what we mean.
EAT LOCAL
Local Groceries: A group of folks who met through CCAN has begun work to start a local cooperative market. Find them on Facebook at Atomic Community Market (you will need a Facebook account to login.)
Pasco Farmers’ Market is open! Richland & Kennewick open in June.
Or get fresh produce delivered (almost) to your door. Schreiber & Son’s Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) sells fresh organic produce. Pay for a share and pick up locally grown food at a drop site each week.
When the summer is over and the farmer’s markets close, don’t despair. Pat & Tam’s Beef and many other favorites are available through the winter months at Shop the Northwest, a partnership with the Richland Parkway businesses and other local businesses.
Become a Master Canner – that’s right WSU Cooperative Extension offers classes on canning so you can do something with all the fresh produce you buy or grow.
Bakeries: Forget the grocery bakeries! Buying from locally owned and operated small businesses keeps the money in the local economy.
Lonardo’s Bakery on Kennewick Avenue is a husband and wife business producing hand crafted breads and pastries, using old world techniques and creating food that’s as pretty as it is tasty.
Vierja’s Bakery Pasco – Two locations, next to the Pasco Farmer’s Market, and across from TRAC on Burden Blvd., Vierja’s makes traditional Mexican delights and GIANT donuts. Attention first timers, don’t just stand there, grab a tray and some tongs and choose from multiple cases.
Main Course Meals – when you go out to eat, do you really want to eat mass produced fare? Maybe at a fast food place, but the big chains serve food that’s pre-cooked, pre-packaged, and full of fat and fake flavors.
Fat Olives in Richland has food made from scratch with as many locally sourced ingredients as possible. Why settle for the big chain restaurants with pre-packaged sauces and pre-made bread?
Where else can you get a fresh-from-scratch meal? You tell us!
Native plants, xeric (low water) and wildlife friendly gardening:
Wildlands, Inc. – This business has a public sale once or twice a year at their Benton City nursery.
Kathy’s Flower Power – Kathy’s been selling her hearty perennials, succulents and herbs, at the Pasco Farmer’s Market for years.
Bug Girl’s Garden – based in Prosser, Bug Girl offers an array of annuals and perennials, locally grown and used to our climate.
